Chery, the prominent Chinese automotive manufacturer, has unveiled its latest electric vehicle (EV) under the iCar sub-brand, drawing apparent inspiration from a variety of rugged 4×4 models.
The iCar V23, revealed in April, marks the brand’s third foray into the electric vehicle segment. Its design echoes that of iconic vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, Suzuki Jimny, Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series, and Land Rover Defender, characterized by a utilitarian, boxy silhouette and elevated ride height.
While initial information regarding the V23 was scant, Chery has now disclosed key pricing and specifications for the Chinese market.
The entry-level model features a 100 kW electric motor generating 180 Nm of torque, paired with a 47.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. This variant offers an estimated range of around 301 kilometers according to the lenient China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC), and retails for approximately RMB 99,800 (around $22,000).
In addition, a single-motor configuration is available with a slightly larger 59.9 kWh battery, promising a driving range of approximately 401 kilometers; however, pricing for this variant has not yet been released. The flagship V23 boasts a dual-motor setup, delivering 155 kW of power and 292 Nm of torque, alongside an 81.8 kWh NMC battery that enables a claimed range of 501 kilometers. This top-tier model starts at RMB 139,800 (approximately A$31,000).
Despite the moderate power outputs, Chery asserts that the single-motor V23 can reach 50 km/h in just 4.8 seconds, while the dual-motor variant is capable of achieving the same speed in a brisk 3.5 seconds. The manufacturer has yet to disclose 0-100 km/h acceleration figures.
With dimensions of 4220 mm in length, 1915 mm in width, and 1845 mm in height—resting on a 2730 mm wheelbase—the V23 is larger in all respects than the recently unveiled Suzuki Jimny XL, though smaller than Chery’s Omoda E5 electric SUV. Additionally, the vehicle features an impressive approach angle of 43 degrees, a departure angle of 41 degrees, and a ground clearance of 212 mm in all-wheel-drive configurations. Standard equipment includes 19-inch wheels for single-motor versions, while dual-motor variants sport 21-inch alloy wheels.
The vehicle is equipped with a sophisticated five-link rear suspension and offers optional off-road tires for enhanced capability. Inside, drivers will find a sizable 15.4-inch infotainment touchscreen positioned above intuitive physical climate controls.
The rear cabin, designed for two passengers, includes fold-flat second-row seats that provide up to 774 liters of cargo space accessed through a side-opening door.
At this stage, Chery has not announced plans to export iCar models to Australia. However, the company recently indicated that the larger V23 sibling, styled similarly but more closely aligned in size with the Omoda 5, will be launched in right-hand-drive markets, including South Africa and Thailand, under the more premium Jaecoo brand, where it will be designated as the J6.
