BMW has unveiled the first teaser images of its highly anticipated iM3 super sedan, an all-electric vehicle set to make its debut in 2028.

The initial glimpses of the camouflaged iM3 prototype suggest that it will boast an impressive output exceeding 746 kW (1,000 hp), powered by a sophisticated quad-motor battery-electric powertrain. Notably, the vehicle showcases nearly production-ready bodywork, hinting at its forthcoming arrival.

This cutting-edge sedan is poised to be built on the pioneering i3 electric sedan platform, which is underpinned by BMW’s innovative Neue Klasse architecture dedicated exclusively to electric vehicles.

In addition to the iM3, BMW intends to continue its legacy of high-performance combustion engines, as the next generation of the renowned M3 will retain the brand’s iconic twin-turbo inline-six engine. This gasoline-powered variant is anticipated to launch around the same time in 2028.

The new M3 is expected to enter production in July 2028, following the debut of the G50-series 3 Series in November 2026, which coincides with the expected production start of the fresh i3 model. As a result, consumers will have the option between petrol and electric powertrains for BMW’s mid-sized sports sedan.

The first model based on the Neue Klasse platform will be the 2025 BMW iX3, set to be followed by the 2026 iteration of the 3 Series.

The design of the iM3 was previously hinted at by the 2023 Vision Neue Klasse concept. It has been observed donning a wider body reminiscent of the i4, but the camouflage suggests it is nearing final production specifications.

Initial low-resolution images shared by BMW reveal that the iM3 will feature muscular wheel arches, bold front and rear bumpers, and sleek pop-out door handles.

Beneath its striking exterior, the iM3 is expected to incorporate an electric motor at each wheel, delivering all-wheel drive as standard and making it the most powerful M model in BMW’s storied history, with approximately double the power output of the current G80-series M3 Competition (375 kW/650 Nm).

Meanwhile, the forthcoming G84-series M3 will introduce a more potent and environmentally friendly Euro 7 emissions-compliant version of the S58 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight six found in its predecessor.
