MG Accelerates Into Premium Territory with Upcoming Electric SUV in Australia
MG is set to elevate its presence in the Australian automotive market with the introduction of a new, upscale electric SUV, anticipated for release in 2025 or 2026.
The upcoming model, captured by CarExpert reader Michael in a Northern Sydney parking lot, appears to be the LS6 from IM Motors, a sister brand under SAIC Motor, MG’s parent company. Although this new SUV is partially concealed, its distinctive features suggest a premium offering.
MG has previously announced plans to introduce two vehicles from the IM line-up, alongside a rapidly expanding portfolio that includes a large SUV and a mid-sized liftback. Most of these models are expected to debut between now and the early to mid-2026 timeframe.
The IM vehicles, bearing MG branding in Australia, are poised to make a notable impact. The LS6 will be available in China with a variety of electrical configurations, including 400V, 800V, and 900V systems. It will feature battery options of 75kWh lithium iron phosphate, along with 83kWh and 100kWh ternary lithium batteries, delivering an impressive range of 625km to 802km on the CLTC cycle.
In terms of dimensions, the LS6 measures 4,910mm in length, 1,988mm in width, and 1,669mm in height, boasting a 2,960mm wheelbase—comparable to the BMW iX. Its performance is equally striking: the rear-wheel-drive model produces 216kW of power and 450Nm of torque, achieving 0-100km/h in a claimed 6.4 seconds. The high-performance dual-motor all-wheel-drive variant, on the other hand, can complete the sprint in a mere 3.48 seconds, offering an exceptional 579kW and 800Nm.
Inside, the LS6 is outfitted with a pair of expansive touchscreens—26.3 inches and 10.5 inches—alongside an optional 15.5-inch passenger display. Luxurious features such as air suspension, a tank turn function, a 20-speaker sound system, and heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats will be available, complete with innovative pet and camping modes.
This premium offering will not stand alone in MG’s lineup, as the smaller ES5 electric SUV is slated to arrive in the second quarter of 2025, and the mid-sized Marvel R has been spotted locally, also expected to launch in 2025. Unlike the more upscale IM vehicles, these models are designed to serve the mass market.
In addition to the LS6 SUV, the closely related L6 sedan shares a striking resemblance in design and interior features, including similarly massive screens. The L6 measures 4,931mm in length, 1,960mm in width, and 1,474mm in height, with a 2,950mm wheelbase. Like its SUV counterpart, it will offer a variety of battery and powertrain options, including a rear-wheel-drive variant with a 100kWh battery, boasting a formidable range of up to 850km on a single charge.
In June 2024, MG Motor Australia CEO Peter Ciao reaffirmed the company’s commitment to expanding its range, emphasizing the launch of premium models to fill gaps in their current offerings. "From the MG 3 to the Cyberster, I plan to introduce a model for every $10,000 increment in price by 2027,” Mr. Ciao remarked to CarExpert.
This ambitious strategy underscores MG’s aspiration to solidify its position as one of Australia’s top three automotive brands in the coming years.
