A motorist has been charged with multiple offenses by New South Wales Police regarding an unroadworthy vehicle following a traffic stop involving a heavily modified Toyota 86.
On December 23, officers from the Auburn Highway Patrol spotted what they described as “most of what was a Toyota 86” navigating through Sydney Olympic Park. The vehicle was notably lacking its front bumper and bonnet, sporting oversized fender flares, and was equipped with an assortment of mismatched wheels.
During the traffic stop, officers examined the vehicle’s South Australian registration, which was discernible from the rear license plate due to the absence of one on the front. It was revealed that the vehicle had received two significant defect notices, both of which remained unresolved.
Further inspection disclosed that the car’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine had been retrofitted with a turbocharger, a modification that had not been approved or certified according to regulatory standards.
The driver faces numerous penalty notices, which include operating a vehicle in violation of a major defect, conducting unauthorized modifications on a registered light vehicle, driving a modified vehicle without the necessary compliance certification, and failing to affix a number plate correctly on a Class A vehicle.
This incident is part of a broader initiative by New South Wales Police to clamp down on modified vehicles. Their ongoing operation, known as Operation Dissent, specifically targets illegal vehicle modifications associated with street racing and anti-social driving behaviors in the Illawarra region.
