Subaru to Unveil Hybrid Versions of Forester and Crosstrek for 2025 Model Year
Subaru has announced an electrifying development in its lineup, introducing hybrid variants of two of its most popular models: the newly redesigned 2025 Forester and the 2025 Crosstrek, which underwent an update in 2024. Notably, this marks the first instance in which the Subaru Forester Hybrid will be available to North American consumers, while the Crosstrek has previously showcased a hybrid option.
Potential Powertrain Details for the Forester Hybrid
Although Subaru has only revealed specifics regarding the Crosstrek Hybrid, it is anticipated that the Forester Hybrid will feature a similar powertrain configuration. This setup comprises a 1.1-kilowatt-hour battery and two electric motors—one tasked with driving the wheels and the other functioning as a generator in conjunction with the combustion engine.
The combined output of these electric motors totals 118 horsepower, integrated within a new transaxle system that includes a front differential gear linked to Subaru’s signature 2.5-liter flat-four Boxer engine. This hybrid powertrain distinguishes itself with a "series-parallel" design, which dynamically selects either the engine or electric motor based on driving conditions.
Fuel Efficiency Expectations for Forester and Crosstrek
The 2025 Subaru Forester is already a strong performer in fuel economy, achieving an EPA rating of 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway with its traditional 2.5-liter Boxer engine. The 2025 Crosstrek shows a slight improvement, recording an additional mile per gallon in urban driving while maintaining the same impressive highway fuel efficiency. Though the fuel economy of the off-road-oriented Wilderness trim will be lower, the introduction of hybrid options could potentially elevate either model to exceed 40 mpg.
While Subaru has yet to reveal pricing details, it is reasonable to anticipate that the hybrid variants will carry a premium compared to their standard counterparts.
A Hybrid Journey for the Crosstrek
The Crosstrek is no stranger to hybrid technology, having offered electrified powertrains in its previous two generations. The inaugural generation featured a conventional hybrid system, whereas the subsequent iteration provided a plug-in hybrid alternative with an extended electric range.
Will this new "series-parallel" system prove to be the enduring solution? Insights on trim availability remain unclear, but hybrid powertrains have increasingly become standard on higher trims of popular models, such as the Honda CR-V and Civic, with the 2025 Toyota Camry even debuting exclusively with a hybrid engine.
Looking Ahead
Subaru has not yet announced a specific launch date for the Forester and Crosstrek Hybrids, although they are confirmed for the 2025 model year. We can expect their arrival in the near future.
If Subaru manages to keep pricing competitive while enhancing fuel economy significantly, the 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid and Crosstrek Hybrid may emerge as compelling options for environmentally-conscious consumers.
